Frequency labels on a Nyquist plot

Applies to: ZSimpWin version on evaluation after V 3.10
Last updated: Sunday March 23, 2003.

We can add frequency labels on a Nyquist plot as shown below:

This plot was obtained by copying the displayed plot to Windows clipboard (Copy plot) and pasting to a Microsoft Word document (MS Word document).

Implementation

  1. Applicable to Nyquist, Admittance, and Capacitance plot styles.
  2. Maximum number of labels is 30.
  3. Label font can be “normal” or “bold”.  Selected by the “Large fonts” checkbox.
  4. Limited number of labels in the region crowded with many points.
  5. Can enable or disable frequency label display.  Added “Freq. Labels” checkbox in the lower toolbar.
  6. Chart color (outside of the charting area) is changed from silver to white when the “Freq. labels” checkbox is checked.   Added to have a white background in captured screen.
  7. The chart, CDC picture, iterate mode run statistics, and frequency labels are assembled as a bitmap, and copied to Windows clipboard.  Saved Microsoft Word document contains all the items on the screen.
  8. For other plot styles, chart is copied to clipboard in Enhanced Metafile format (EMF).  Higher resolution is provided with this format for an output printed from the screen.

The default format to copy a graphics image to Windows clipboard is Enhanced Metafile format (a vector format).  This format provides a high resolution.  We have created a bitmap containing the chart, CDC picture, iterate mode run statistics, and the frequency labels, and then copied to the clipboard.  BMP format led to a lower resolution in the output generated with Save Plot and Print plot menus.

The labels on a chart, located on a different layer, could not be printed directly from the screen (Print plot) or included in the saved picture file (Save plot).

Screen Capture

To save the displayed plot as a picture file, you must use a screen capture utility program.

You can use a simple program such as Capture Plus 2.0.  This program works as follows:

  1. Setup configuration (the folder to save captured files, graphics format (BMP or JPG), and file name (NAME).
  2. Run Capture Plus. This program stays in the toolbar.
  3. Run ZSimpWin.
  4. Press Alt – PrtScr to capture the active window.  Captured files are saved as **NAME.BMP, or **NAME.JPG, where ** is a sequential two digit number.
  5. Remove the main menu and toolbars included in the plot using other graphics editor.

Alternatively, you can use a full-featured graphics application such as IrfanView to capture the client area.  The main menu and the toolbars included in the plot should be removed (cropped) before saving the picture.

Plan

After further testing and evaluation, this feature will be included in the next release.
